What To Buy
Low (Virgin) 1977
David Bowie kicks drugs, moves to Berlin and enlists Brian Eno’s help to compose an album of short art-rockers and atmospheric instrumental. Mighty.
Five Lesser-known David Bowie Classic
Queen Bitch 1971
Containing one of rock’s greatest riffs courtesy of Mick Ronson, this track is a cheeky homage to David Bowie’s old pal Lou Reed.
Moving track that pays tribute to late New York Doll Billy Murcia. Also notable for the extremely rare lyrical use of the word ‘wanking’.
From ‘Diamond Dogs’, a kind of anti-‘Heroes’ where bored potential lover draws uncomfortable parallels of his desire with politics.
It’s No Game, Pt 1980
Opening Track on ‘Scary Monster…’ and the template for Elastica’s career. David Bowie hears the new romantic, then pisses all over them.
Stranger When We Meet 1995
This tune, taken from the Buddha Of Suburbia soundtrack, got David Bowie back on track after the Tin Machine Years.
David Robert Jones (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016), known as David Bowie. On 10 January 2016, two days after his 69th birthday and the release of the album Blackstar, David Bowie died from liver cancer in his New York City apartment. He had been diagnosed 18 months earlier but had not made the news of his illness public. The Belgian theater director Ivo van Hove, who had worked with the singer on his Off-Broadway musical Lazarus, explained that David Bowie was unable to attend rehearsals due to the progression of the disease. He noted that David Bowie had kept working during the illness.
